An Army body fat calculator estimates your body fat percentage from your body measurements and weight, then checks it against Army standards. The current method (2024) uses your abdominal circumference at the navel and your body weight to produce an estimate and tell you whether you'd meet the AR 600-9 limit for your age and sex.
Since 2024 the Army uses a one-site tape test: measure abdominal circumference at the navel and your weight, then apply a sex-specific formula. Men: −26.97 − 0.12×weight(lb) + 1.99×abdomen(in). Women: −9.15 − 0.015×weight(lb) + 1.27×abdomen(in).
Use a non-stretch tape against the skin, keep it level and parallel to the floor, and measure at the end of a normal relaxed exhale. Take each measurement a few times and round down to the nearest half inch.

Worked example (imperial). Male, 180 lb, abdomen 34 in: −26.97 − (0.12×180) + (1.99×34) = −26.97 − 21.6 + 67.66 = 19.1% body fat.
Worked example (metric). Female, 63.5 kg (140 lb), abdomen 81.3 cm (32 in): −9.15 − (0.015×140) + (1.27×32) = 29.4% body fat. Metric inputs are converted to pounds and inches before the formula is applied.
The older log-based tape test (Hodgdon-Beckett), still useful for comparison. Men use height, neck and waist; women add the hip.
Worked example. Male, height 70 in, neck 15 in, waist 34 in → 86.010·log₁₀(19) − 70.041·log₁₀(70) + 36.76 = 17.5% body fat.
BMI = weight(kg) ÷ height(m)². Body fat is then roughly estimated with the Deurenberg equation: %BF = 1.20×BMI + 0.23×age − 10.8×sex − 5.4 (sex = 1 male, 0 female). BMI ignores muscle, so it's the least precise — included only for context.
From the chosen body-fat percentage: Fat mass = weight × %BF; Lean body mass = weight − fat mass. Waist-to-height ratio = abdomen ÷ height (below 0.5 is generally considered healthy).

Body fat percentage is the share of your total body weight that is fat tissue, with the rest — muscle, bone, organs, and water — making up your lean body mass. Two people can weigh exactly the same yet have very different body compositions, which is why the scale alone is a poor measure of fitness. A calculator like this one estimates that percentage from external measurements rather than measuring fat directly.
The Army tracks body composition because it correlates with health and performance. Research tied to the 2021–2023 program review found a clear relationship between higher body fat and lower Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT) scores. The goal isn't aesthetics — it's readiness. Standards exist so that soldiers can meet the physical demands of service, and the body fat assessment is the fallback check when someone exceeds the simple height/weight screening table.
The process has two stages. First is a height/weight screening: if you're at or below the maximum weight for your height, you're compliant and no tape test is needed. If you're over that weight, the tape test determines whether you still meet standards by body fat. Since 2024, that tape test is the one-site method — a single abdominal measurement combined with your weight — which replaced the older multi-site approach.
The Army adopted the one-site method after the Army Comprehensive Body Composition Study assessed more than 2,600 soldiers and found the old multi-site test frequently flagged lean, muscular, high-performing soldiers as over standard. Measuring a single site — the abdomen at the navel — reduces the number of places an error can creep in and produces more consistent results. Your weight and that one circumference drive the estimate through a simple linear formula.
Accuracy lives in the details. Use a non-stretch (fiberglass) tape, measure against the skin at the level of the navel, and keep the tape parallel to the floor all the way around. Stand relaxed with your arms at your sides and take the reading at the end of a normal exhale — never suck in or push out. Small changes in tension, posture, or placement can shift the circumference by enough to move your result near a cutoff, so measure several times and round down to the nearest half inch, exactly as the Army does.
BMI compares weight to height and knows nothing about muscle, so a heavily trained soldier can read as "overweight" by BMI while being well within body fat standards. That's precisely the gap the tape test fills. BMI is a fast screen; the circumference method is the more relevant check for whether someone actually carries excess fat. Once you know your body fat percentage, lean body mass follows directly: it's everything that isn't fat. Tracking lean mass alongside body fat is useful because the healthiest way to improve your number is usually to preserve or build lean mass while reducing fat, rather than simply losing weight. Rapid weight loss that strips muscle can hurt performance even as the scale drops.
The most frequent errors are measuring at the wrong height (above or below the navel), holding the tape at an angle, bracing or sucking in the stomach, using a stretchy tape, and taking a single reading instead of averaging. Each of these can nudge your result by a percentage point or more. Because standards are pass/fail at a specific number, consistency in how you measure matters more than chasing one "perfect" reading.
If you're close to a cutoff, the levers that help most are reducing abdominal circumference through fat loss and staying well-hydrated and consistent in your measurement routine. Crash tactics don't beat the tape reliably, and dehydration or last-minute gimmicks aren't a substitute for genuine changes in body composition.
