Healthy Weight Calculator

This calculator estimates the weight range that corresponds to the adult healthy BMI category (18.5 to less than 25) for your height. Enter your height to see the range — it's an approximate screening range, not a personalised target.

cm
kg

The result is an approximate weight range from the adult BMI thresholds — not a "perfect", "ideal", or medically required weight. BMI is a screening measure that doesn't account for muscle, body composition, or individual health. For ages 2–19, use a child BMI calculator.

What is a healthy weight?

A healthy weight calculator estimates the weight range that corresponds to the adult BMI Healthy Weight category for your height. Using the standard adult BMI classification, the healthy range is 18.5 to less than 25. This is a screening-based range, not a personalised medical target — an individual's health depends on much more than weight.

Key Facts

Adult healthy BMI: 18.5 to less than 25.
Calculation: weight = BMI × height².
Primary input: height.
Result: an approximate weight range.
BMI is a screening measure, not a diagnosis.
Children use BMI-for-age percentiles.
Ideal weight is a separate, formula-based concept.
Body fat is a separate composition measure.

How the Calculation Works

The healthy weight range is the BMI formula solved for weight:

BMI = weight ÷ height² → weight = BMI × height²
Lower bound = 18.5 × height² · Upper bound = 25 × height²

Because the adult Healthy Weight category is 18.5 to less than 25, the upper figure represents the point where BMI reaches 25 — the boundary of the category, not a value inside it. In US units, weight (lb) = BMI × height(in)² ÷ 703.

Worked Examples

165 cm

1.65 m → lower 18.5 × 1.65² = 50.4 kg · upper (BMI 25) 25 × 1.65² = 68.1 kg
Range ≈ 50–68 kg (111–150 lb)

175 cm

1.75 m → 18.5 × 1.75² = 56.7 kg · 25 × 1.75² = 76.6 kg
Range ≈ 57–77 kg (125–169 lb)

180 cm

1.80 m → 18.5 × 1.80² = 59.9 kg · 25 × 1.80² = 81.0 kg
Range ≈ 60–81 kg (132–179 lb)

5 ft 10 in (70 in)

Lower 18.5 × 70² ÷ 703 = 129 lb · upper 25 × 70² ÷ 703 = 174 lb
Range ≈ 129–174 lb (58–79 kg)

Healthy Weight by Height

The upper figure is the BMI-25 boundary. The Healthy Weight category is below BMI 25.

Comparing Your Current Weight

If you enter a current weight, the calculator shows your current BMI and where that weight falls relative to the range — below, within, or above. It uses neutral wording and does not tell you to lose or gain a specific amount. For example, at 175 cm and 80 kg, current BMI is about 26.1 (overweight category), which is above the ~57–77 kg BMI-based range. That comparison locates the weight on the BMI screening scale; it does not by itself determine anyone's health.

How Healthy Weight Compares to Other Measures

This page owns one job: the BMI-based weight range for a height. Related calculators answer different questions, so they complement it rather than duplicate it.

Healthy weight vs BMI

BMI is the calculated number from weight and height; the healthy weight range is the weight range that matches the healthy BMI category at your height. Compute the number itself with the BMI calculator.

Healthy weight vs ideal weight

This is the key distinction. Healthy weight is a BMI-based range; an "ideal weight" comes from separate formulas (Devine, Robinson, Miller, Hamwi) and is usually a single reference number. They aren't interchangeable — compare with the ideal weight calculator.

Healthy weight vs body fat percentage

A BMI-based range uses total weight and says nothing about composition; body fat percentage estimates the share of weight that is fat. You can sit inside the range with quite different body composition. Estimate it with the body fat calculator.

Healthy weight vs lean body mass

Healthy weight is a total-weight range; lean body mass estimates your non-fat mass. They're not the same — see the lean body mass calculator.

Healthy weight vs child BMI

Adult BMI thresholds must not be applied to children and teens. Ages 2–19 use sex-specific BMI-for-age percentiles (healthy = 5th to under 85th percentile). Use the child BMI calculator.

Healthy weight vs body surface area

Body surface area is a separate body-size measure used in specific clinical contexts and isn't a weight range. See the body surface area calculator.

Healthy weight vs adjusted body weight

Adjusted body weight is a specialised calculation for certain clinical and nutrition contexts — not a healthy weight range, and not something to self-apply medically. See the adjusted body weight calculator.

Healthy weight vs body shape

Body shape describes proportions and fat distribution; it doesn't define whether a weight is healthy. Explore the body shape calculator.

Why Healthy Weight Is More Than a Number

A BMI-based weight range doesn't directly account for muscle mass, fat distribution, body composition, waist circumference, fitness, medical history, laboratory findings, medications, individual health conditions, or pregnancy. The CDC frames BMI as a screen to consider alongside those broader factors — so treat this range as one input, not a complete picture of health.

Why waist circumference can add context

Where fat is stored matters. Abdominal fat is more strongly linked to cardiometabolic risk, so waist circumference is sometimes used alongside BMI to add context a weight range alone can't provide.

Can a muscular person be healthy outside this range?

Yes. Because BMI uses total weight and can't separate muscle from fat, a very muscular person can sit above the range with low body fat. Athletes needn't ignore the range, but should read it with composition measures like the body fat, lean body mass, or FFMI calculators.

Special Populations

Children and teens (2–19) are assessed with BMI-for-age percentiles, not adult thresholds — use the child BMI calculator. During pregnancy, weight is assessed with pregnancy-specific clinical guidance, not this calculator. Older adults use the same adult thresholds, but body composition and clinical context affect interpretation, so the range doesn't become a personalised target based on age alone.

For children and teenagers, use BMI-for-age. Don't apply the adult 18.5–<25 range to anyone aged 2–19 — their healthy range is defined by percentiles that change with growth. Use the child BMI calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a healthy weight?
In this calculator, a healthy weight is the weight range that corresponds to the adult BMI Healthy Weight category (18.5 to less than 25) for your height. It's a screening-based range, not a single correct weight.
What is a healthy weight for my height?
Enter your height above and the calculator converts the adult healthy BMI range into a weight range. For 175 cm, that's roughly 57 to 77 kg (125 to 169 lb).
How is healthy weight calculated?
By solving the BMI formula for weight: weight = BMI × height². The lower bound uses BMI 18.5 and the upper bound the BMI-25 boundary, since the Healthy Weight category is 18.5 to less than 25.
What BMI range is considered healthy?
For adults, the healthy BMI range is 18.5 to less than 25 under the CDC framework. Below 18.5 is underweight, 25 to under 30 is overweight, and 30 or higher is obesity.
What is the healthy weight range for adults?
It depends on height, because it's derived from the BMI range. Taller people have a higher healthy weight range; the calculator gives the range for your specific height.
Is healthy weight the same as ideal weight?
No. A healthy weight here is a BMI-based range; an ideal weight comes from separate formulas (like Devine or Robinson) and is usually a single reference number. They're different concepts.
Is healthy weight the same as BMI?
No. BMI is the calculated number from weight and height. The healthy weight range is the weight range that corresponds to the healthy BMI category at your height.
Does healthy weight depend on age?
The adult BMI thresholds aren't adjusted by age, so this range doesn't change with age. Children and teens are assessed differently, with BMI-for-age percentiles.
Does healthy weight depend on sex?
The adult BMI range is the same for men and women, so the calculated weight range is too. Body composition can differ, which is one reason it's only a screening range.
Can muscular people have a BMI above the healthy range?
Yes. BMI uses total weight and can't separate muscle from fat, so very muscular people can sit above the BMI-based range despite low body fat.
Does BMI measure body fat?
No. BMI and the BMI-based healthy weight range use only height and weight. A body fat calculator estimates the fat percentage separately.
Can someone have a healthy BMI but high body fat?
Yes. Two people in the same BMI-based range can have very different body composition, which is why body fat percentage adds context BMI can't.
What is the difference between healthy weight and ideal weight?
Healthy weight is a BMI-based range; ideal weight is a formula-based reference number. The first gives a range, the second usually a single estimate.
What is the difference between healthy weight and body fat?
Healthy weight is a total-weight range from BMI thresholds. Body fat percentage estimates the share of your weight that is fat — a composition measure, not a weight range.
How is healthy weight calculated in pounds?
Weight in pounds = BMI × height in inches² ÷ 703. The range uses BMI 18.5 for the lower bound and the BMI-25 boundary for the upper bound.
How is healthy weight calculated in kilograms?
Weight in kg = BMI × height in meters². For 175 cm: 18.5 × 1.75² ≈ 56.7 kg to 25 × 1.75² ≈ 76.6 kg.
Is this calculator suitable for children?
No. Adult BMI thresholds shouldn't be applied to children and teens. Ages 2–19 are assessed with BMI-for-age percentiles using a child BMI calculator.
Can pregnant people use a healthy weight calculator?
Standard adult BMI ranges aren't designed for pregnancy, which follows pregnancy-specific clinical guidance. Talk with a healthcare professional about weight during pregnancy.
Does waist circumference matter?
It can add context. Where fat is stored, especially around the abdomen, is relevant to health risk, so waist measurement is sometimes used alongside BMI.
Should I aim for the middle of the healthy weight range?
There's no single correct point within the range, and the calculator doesn't set a target. A healthcare professional can help interpret what's appropriate for you.
Why do different healthy weight calculators give different results?
They round differently and may handle the upper BMI-25 boundary differently. Small differences are normal; treat any result as approximate.
Is a healthy weight the same for everyone?
No. This is a screening range based on height alone. Individual health depends on many factors BMI can't capture, so the range is a starting point, not a verdict.

Sources & Methodology

This calculator derives the healthy weight range from the standard adult BMI formula (weight = BMI × height²) and the adult Healthy Weight BMI category defined by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): 18.5 to less than 25. The lower bound uses BMI 18.5; the upper figure is the BMI-25 boundary, and the category itself is below 25. Internal calculations are unrounded; only displayed weights are rounded. Pediatric assessment (ages 2–19) uses BMI-for-age percentiles and is handled by a separate child BMI calculator.
